About This Plant
Prunus cerasifera 'Newport' (Flowering Plum), 'Newport' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Cherry Plum / Purple-leaf Plum , small flowering tree grown for early-spring pink flowers and distinctive purple foliage all season. 'Thundercloud' and 'Newport' are popular cultivars.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 9. Watch for aphids, leaf curl, black knot, and borers. Short-lived (20 to 30 yr).
For a Pacific Northwest native counterpart in scale and bloom, consider Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon / Western Serviceberry) for white spring flowers and edible blue berries, or Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for show-stopping spring bracts in light shade.
