About This Plant

Populus nigra 'Afghanica' (Theves Poplar), 'Afghanica' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Lombardy Poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica') , narrow columnar fast-growing tree, classic windbreak species. Short-lived (often 15 to 30 yr).

Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained; tolerates a range soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 8. Susceptible to canker and various leaf diseases. Aggressive shallow roots, site away from foundations and septic.

For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
