About This Plant
Forest Flame is one of the most theatrical broadleaf evergreens available for Pacific Northwest gardens. Each spring, the new growth emerges in brilliant scarlet red, then passes through shades of pink and creamy white before settling into mature dark green, all while the older foliage stays evergreen below. This color progression unfolds over several weeks, so the shrub looks like it is lit from within during the peak of spring. Pendulous clusters of small white urn-shaped flowers appear at the same time, adding fragrance and delicacy against the fiery new leaves.
Forest Flame grows to around 9 to 12 feet tall at maturity but is slow enough that it stays well-mannered in a garden for many years. It thrives alongside rhododendrons and azaleas in part shade conditions with acidic, organic soil, a combination that suits our coastal Oregon climate well. Shelter from harsh winds helps prevent desiccation of the new growth, which is more vulnerable than the mature foliage.
Use it as a specimen focal point, in a mixed shrub border, or at the woodland edge where dappled light brings out the best in its color show. Once established, it needs minimal care beyond the occasional mulching to keep the root zone cool and moist.
