About This Plant

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diablo' (Ninebark), 'Diablo', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.

Ninebark (Physocarpus) is a tough native-allied shrub (P. capitatus is the PNW native) with peeling bark, white or pink summer flower clusters, and brilliant foliage in modern cultivars (Diabolo, Summer Wine, Coppertina, Tiny Wine).

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 7. Generally trouble-free; very hardy and adaptable. Tolerates a range of conditions.

For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
