About This Plant
Tomatillos are one of those vegetables that feel almost exotic to grow but are surprisingly well-suited to the Oregon coast once you give them a warm spot and a little protection from wind. 'Toma Verde' is a classic green-fruited variety that produces the tart, slightly sticky fruits essential to fresh salsa verde, roasted green sauces, and a range of Mexican and Central American dishes. Fruits are ready to harvest when the papery husk splits and the tomatillo inside fills it out to a firm, bright green globe.
Plant tomatillos in your sunniest raised bed or in a large container you can move to capture warmth. They are related to tomatoes and share similar needs: consistent moisture, well-drained fertile soil, and as much heat as coastal Oregon will offer. One important point, tomatillos are not self-fertile, so you need at least two plants nearby for good fruit set. Cages or stakes help keep the sprawling branches upright and make harvest easier as plants mature to three or four feet tall.
A productive 'Toma Verde' plant can yield a generous harvest from midsummer through the first frost. The fruits hold well on the plant and can also be stored in their husks in a cool spot for several weeks after picking.
