About This Plant
Philodendrons are among the most adaptable and forgiving tropical foliage plants you can grow indoors, which is exactly why they have been a houseplant staple for generations. Whether you choose a climbing heartleaf type or an upright split-leaf form, the common thread is lush, deep-green foliage that actively improves a room's air quality while tolerating the low light and inconsistent watering that would stress less resilient plants.
These plants thrive in bright indirect light but can manage in medium light, making them genuinely useful in spaces away from windows. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, use a well-draining potting mix, and feed monthly through the growing season. Trailing varieties look striking in hanging baskets or on high shelves where their stems can cascade freely. Upright forms make bold architectural statements on a plant stand or in a floor container.
Philodendrons are fast growers that reward minimal attention with impressive results. Most propagate easily from stem cuttings in water, making them great plants to share. All philodendrons are toxic to pets and children, so placement matters in households with curious animals or small kids.
