About This Plant

Penstemon serrulatus (Purple Penstemon), 'Purple Penstemon', is valued for seasonal interest and the role it plays in PNW garden borders.

Beardtongues (Penstemon) are western N American perennials with tubular flower spikes in red, pink, blue, purple, or white that hummingbirds love.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained, lean soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 9. Sharp drainage essential. Drought-tolerant once established.

For a Pacific Northwest native perennial of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Tellima grandiflora (Fringecups), or Dicentra formosa (Pacific Bleeding Heart) , all support native pollinators.
