Care Notes

Evergreen shrub with glossy holly-like leaves (O. heterophyllus) or smooth oval leaves (O. delavayi). Full sun to part shade, well-drained soil, average water once established. TINY FOUR-PETAL WHITE FLOWERS with POWERFUL SWEET APRICOT-JASMINE FRAGRANCE that carries on the wind. Late-fall bloomers (heterophyllus, burkwoodii) are prized as 'off-season' fragrance for PNW shade gardens; delavayi blooms in early spring. Tough, long-lived, slow-growing. Tolerant of pruning; can be hedged. Deer resistant. Feed bees and late-season pollinators.
