Origanum 'Kent Beauty' (Ornamental Oregano)

Origanum 'Kent Beauty' is one of the most quietly stunning plants in the ornamental garden. Its trailing stems carry small, rounded blue-green leaves with a subtle silver veining, and from midsummer into fall it produces pendulous, hop-like bracts in papery shades of pink, cream, and soft green. Those bracts are what make it special: they hold their color and texture long after cutting, making it a favorite for dried arrangements as well as fresh bouquets.

This subshrub thrives in the conditions that challenge many other plants: dry, gritty, or sandy soils with excellent drainage. It's an excellent candidate for rock gardens, the edges of raised beds, retaining walls, or any spot where you want trailing texture without fussing over water. It performs especially well when planted where stems can cascade over a ledge or container rim, letting the pendulous flowers hang freely.

The aromatic foliage is deer and rabbit resistant, and the plant is tolerant of coastal conditions including salt exposure. While technically a perennial in zones 5-9, it's often grown as an annual in wetter sites where drainage can't be guaranteed. Give it sun and lean soil, and it will reward you with months of the most unusual flower structures in the garden.
