About This Plant

Black Mondo Grass is one of the most striking ground covers available, producing narrow, strap-like leaves in a deep purple so dark they read as black in most garden settings. It is not a true grass but a member of the lily family, and it grows as a slow-spreading clump that forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat over time. Small pale pink flowers appear in summer, followed by glossy black berries that persist into winter.

The foliage color shows best against light-colored mulch, gravel, or pale stone. Use it as a border edging, a ground cover under trees, or as a dramatic contrast plant alongside silver or chartreuse companions. It is particularly effective in combination with Japanese maples, heucheras, or golden creeping Jenny. The contrast it creates is almost graphic in its clarity.

Black Mondo Grass prefers moist, well-drained soil and tolerates both sun and partial shade, though afternoon shade in warm, dry summers keeps it looking its best. It spreads slowly by short stolons and is well-behaved enough for close plantings where invasive grasses would cause problems. Once established it is drought-tolerant and requires very little maintenance beyond dividing clumps every few years if they become crowded.
