About This Plant
'Purple Petra' basil is as beautiful as it is useful. The leaves are a deep, glossy burgundy-purple that looks genuinely ornamental in the herb garden, in a container planting, or tucked into a mixed border for color contrast. The flavor is classic sweet basil with a slightly spicier edge, making it excellent in Italian cooking, pesto, Caprese salads, and anywhere you'd use green basil.
Plants grow compact and bushy, reaching about 18 to 24 inches, and produce soft lavender-pink flower spikes in summer that should be pinched off if you want to keep harvesting leaves. 'Purple Petra' needs the same conditions as any basil: full sun, warmth, consistent moisture, and good drainage.
Whether you're growing it purely for the kitchen or using it as a bold foliage accent in a summer planter, 'Purple Petra' delivers on both counts.
