Nyssa sylvatica (Sour Gum Tree), 'Sour Gum Tree' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Tupelo / Black Gum , eastern N American native with glossy summer leaves and brilliant red-purple-orange fall display, among the most reliable fall-color trees. Excellent for honeybees.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained; tolerates seasonally wet soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 9. Adaptable to a range of soil moistures, including occasionally wet sites. Generally trouble-free.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
