About This Plant
Common Myrtle brings ancient Mediterranean elegance to Pacific Northwest gardens. This broadleaf evergreen shrub produces glossy, dark green, aromatic leaves that release a spicy fragrance when brushed, followed by clouds of white flowers with showy golden stamens from late spring through midsummer. The flowers give way to small blue-black berries that birds relish and that have a long culinary history as a pepper substitute and liqueur ingredient. In our mild Oregon coastal climate, myrtle thrives outdoors in a sheltered spot protected from cold, drying winds, and it makes an outstanding candidate for a clipped formal hedge or allowed to grow as a loose, informal screen.
Plant Common Myrtle in full sun for the best flowering, though it tolerates partial shade. It adapts well to most well-drained soils and once established shows good drought tolerance, requiring only occasional deep watering in summer. Its dense, fragrant foliage and small, tough leaves make it naturally resistant to deer browsing, and the salt-tolerant constitution makes it a practical choice for coastal gardens. Bees are strongly attracted to the nectar-rich flowers, delivering solid pollinator value through the summer months.
Train myrtle as a specimen, a low hedge, or a container plant that can overwinter indoors in colder settings. Prune after flowering to shape and maintain size. In Zones 8 and warmer it is reliably evergreen and long-lived, rewarding patient gardeners with decades of fragrant bloom and bird-attracting fruit.
