About This Plant

Sensitive Plant is one of the most interactive houseplants in existence. Touch its feathery leaflets and they fold inward within seconds, then slowly reopen over the next few minutes, a rapid thigmonastic response that never loses its novelty. Native to tropical South and Central America, Mimosa pudica produces small, fluffy pink pompom flowers in summer and grows as a low spreading subshrub, typically staying 12 to 24 inches tall and wide in a container. It is most often grown as an annual or biennial houseplant in Oregon.

Grow in bright indirect to direct light indoors, or in a sunny sheltered spot outdoors during frost-free months. Use a rich, well-draining potting mix and maintain consistently moist (not wet) soil. Sensitive Plant demands warmth and humidity. Keep temperatures above 60 degrees F and mist regularly or use a pebble tray to boost moisture. It is not frost tolerant and will not survive Oregon winters outdoors. Handle with care, as the stems carry small curved thorns. Plants commonly last one to two growing seasons before declining.

This is an outstanding plant for children and classrooms because of its immediate tactile response. Grow it in a bright window, water faithfully, and it rewards curious fingers all season long. Start fresh seeds each spring for the best vigor.
