About This Plant
Prayer Plants are named for their nightly habit of folding their leaves upward like hands in prayer, a movement controlled by tiny pulvini at the base of each leaf stem that respond to changes in light. Maranta leuconeura 'Silver Band' features deep green leaves with a broad silver or pale green stripe running down the center midrib, flanked by darker markings and a red-veined underside that shows when the leaves fold up in the evening. It is one of the more restrained and elegant Maranta patterns compared to some of the boldly marked cultivars.
This plant is happiest in the kind of humid, warm environment found in a bathroom or kitchen with good indirect light. It tolerates lower light better than many houseplants and is a good option for spots that don't get direct sun. Consistent moisture and higher humidity bring out the best foliage quality, and the red undersides become more visible as the plant matures. The nightly leaf movement is genuinely engaging to watch, making this one of those plants that rewards attention in small ways throughout the day. Non-toxic and relatively compact, it suits mixed plant arrangements and terrariums as well as solo display.
