About This Plant
Prayer plants earn their name from a genuinely charming behavior: each evening, the leaves fold upward along their midribs like hands pressed together in prayer, then unfurl again by morning. This nyctinastic movement is easy to observe and never gets old. The Lemon Lime variety turns the spectacle up visually, replacing the typical red-veined pattern with bright yellow-green stripes fanning out from a darker green center, giving each leaf a freshly painted quality.
Maranta leuconeura is a low-growing, spreading plant that stays compact, typically under a foot tall, making it ideal for tabletops, bathroom shelves, or any spot with soft indirect light. It comes from the floor of tropical Brazilian rainforests, which tells you what it needs: consistent moisture, good humidity, warmth, and protection from direct sun, which will bleach and scorch those vivid leaf markings. A pebble tray with water beneath the pot goes a long way toward giving it the humidity it wants, especially during drier winter months indoors.
The Lemon Lime coloring makes this variety particularly striking in a grouping with darker-leaved tropicals, where it provides a punch of chartreuse contrast.
