About This Plant

Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' (Purple Lily Magnolia) is a Lily Magnolia, a China ornamental cultivar 'Nigra'.

Shrubby Asian magnolia (10 to 15 ft) with goblet-shaped purple-pink flowers in mid-spring. Often a parent of Saucer Magnolia hybrids.

Plant in full sun to part shade, in humus-rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 8. Long-lived. Generally deer-resistant once established.

If you'd like a Pacific Northwest native tree with similar grace, consider Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood), Acer circinatum (Vine Maple), Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone), or Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon). These provide bird food, pollinator support, and Indigenous food heritage in your landscape.
