About This Plant

Magnolia 'Judy Zuk' is a stunning hybrid deciduous magnolia that produces large, fragrant, soft yellow blooms in early spring before the leaves emerge. Named for the late director of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, this cultivar is prized for its clean, butter-yellow flower color, rarer than the more common pink and white magnolias and a showstopper in the early spring landscape. Flowers can reach 6 to 8 inches across and open over several weeks, providing a long-lasting floral display.

A moderate-growing small tree, 'Judy Zuk' matures to 15 to 20 feet with an upright to broadly rounded habit, fitting well into residential gardens with room to develop. It thrives in the mild coastal climate of southwestern Oregon, where late frosts are uncommon and the cool, moist winters suit magnolias well. Plant in a sheltered location with morning sun to protect blooms from wind damage during peak flower.

This magnolia requires minimal maintenance once established. A light feeding in early spring and occasional shaping after bloom is all it needs. Avoid heavy pruning, as magnolias are slow to heal large cuts. The large, leathery leaves provide a lush backdrop through summer before dropping cleanly in autumn.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. Water deeply during the first 2 to 3 seasons to establish a strong root system. Feed with an acidic slow-release fertilizer in early spring before budbreak. Prune only after flowering and only to shape, major pruning should be avoided. Mulch around the root zone to retain moisture and protect shallow roots.
