About This Plant
Lonicera caerulea 'Indigo Gem' (Honeyberry), 'Indigo Gem', is valued in PNW gardens for its character and seasonal interest.
Honeysuckles (Lonicera) include both vining and shrubby species , shrub forms (L. nitida, L. pileata) make graceful evergreen hedges, while flowering deciduous species bear fragrant trumpet-shaped flowers.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 9. INVASIVE WATCH: L. japonica and several Lonicera vines are invasive in many parts of the eastern US , less aggressive in PNW but worth siting carefully. Watch for honeysuckle aphid.
For a Pacific Northwest native plant of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray), or Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape) , all support native pollinators and birds.
