About This Plant
Liquidambar styraciflua 'Festival' (Sweet Gum), 'Festival' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Sweetgum , large shade tree native to eastern N America, prized for star-shaped leaves and outstanding multi-color fall display in red, orange, purple, and gold.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. Spiny gumball seed pods can be a nuisance, choose seedless cultivars like 'Rotundiloba' if pods are unwanted. Watch for sweetgum scale.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
