Tree Mallows (Lavatera) bear showy hibiscus-like pink or white flowers from summer through fall on a fast-growing semi-woody shrub.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 7 to 9. Short-lived (4 to 7 yr) but spectacular. Generally trouble-free.
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
