About This Plant
Fat Spike lavender is the common name for the robust hybrid lavandin known botanically as Grosso, one of the most widely grown lavenders in the world for both its extraordinary fragrance and its bold visual presence. The flower spikes are notably large and richly colored, a deep, saturated violet-blue borne on tall stems above a tidy silver-green mound.
As a Lavandula intermedia hybrid, Fat Spike inherits vigor from both parent species. It grows larger and produces more abundant flower spikes than English lavender varieties, typically reaching 24 to 36 inches in a tidy mound. Deer, rabbits, and most pests leave it alone.
This is one of the lavenders most beloved by the cut flower and dried herb industry, and it is easy to see why. The large spikes dry beautifully, retaining their color and fragrance for months.
