Lamprocapnos spectabilis 'Pink' (Bleeding Heart)

Bleeding Heart is a spring garden classic, producing arching stems hung with perfectly formed, heart-shaped flowers in clear pink over blue-green, deeply divided foliage. The old-fashioned name suits it perfectly, and few plants evoke the character of a classic cottage garden as effectively. Flowers appear in mid-spring, typically just as tulips are finishing, and the display lasts for several weeks in cool weather.

Plant Bleeding Heart in a spot where its late-season dormancy is not a problem. By midsummer the foliage yellows and dies back entirely, leaving a gap in the border that benefits from neighboring plants filling in. Hostas, ferns, and astilbes make ideal companions because they expand as Bleeding Heart fades, naturally concealing the bare ground. Interplanting with these partners is part of good planning for a spring perennial border.

Bleeding Heart performs beautifully on the Oregon coast, where cool springs give it the extended bloom time it prefers. Plant in moist, humusy soil with partial shade or dappled light, particularly in spots that receive afternoon shade in summer. Divide clumps every three to four years in early fall to maintain vigor and increase your planting. The cut flowers are charming in small arrangements and last well in water.
