About This Plant

Lagerstroemia 'Dwarf' is a Crape Myrtle, a Eastern Asia (China, Korea) ornamental cultivar 'Dwarf'.

Late-summer flowering tree or large shrub with crepe-paper crinkly flowers in pink/purple/red/white. Smooth cinnamon-mottled bark in winter. PNW NOTE: needs maximum heat to bloom well; coastal cool summers reduce flowering. Plant in hottest, sunniest spot. DO NOT 'crape murder' (heavy pollarding); thin and shape lightly.

Plant in full sun (essential), in average to dry, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 6 to 9. Long-lived. Generally deer-resistant once established.

If you'd like a Pacific Northwest native tree with similar grace, consider Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood), Acer circinatum (Vine Maple), Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone), or Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon). These provide bird food, pollinator support, and Indigenous food heritage in your landscape.

Care Notes

Plant in average to dry, well-drained soil. In PNW, site in the hottest, sunniest available spot; south or west-facing walls maximize heat accumulation needed for good flowering. Prune by thinning and light shaping in late winter only; never top or heavily pollard the main stems. Watch for powdery mildew; choose mildew-resistant selections where possible.
