About This Plant
'Blue Star' juniper is a compact, slow-growing evergreen that earns a permanent spot in the landscape through sheer reliability. Its dense, mounding habit and intensely silver-blue foliage make it one of the most eye-catching dwarf conifers available, and it holds its color through all four seasons without any attention from the gardener.
The slow growth rate, typically just a few inches per year, keeps 'Blue Star' in scale for many years in rock gardens, containers, mixed borders, and low foundation plantings. It matures to roughly three feet tall and wide over a decade or more, making it one of those rare plants that looks exactly like it belongs wherever you put it. Pair it with ornamental grasses, heathers, or other conifers for textural contrast.
Plant in well-drained soil with full sun for the best foliage color. 'Blue Star' handles the conditions along the Oregon coast well, including wind and the occasional hard frost, though it prefers a site that doesn't collect standing water in winter. Once established, minimal care is needed beyond the occasional removal of any winter-damaged tips in early spring.
