About This Plant

Juniperus sabina 'Blue Forest' (Savin Juniper) is a Juniper cultivar, 'Blue Forest', valued for its sculptural form and refined evergreen texture in the landscape.

Junipers are among the toughest, most drought-tolerant evergreens for hot, lean, sun-baked sites. Forms range from prostrate groundcovers to upright spires. Needle-like juvenile foliage and scale-like adult foliage often on the same plant; many cultivars in blue, green, gold.

Full sun suits this species best. Plant in well-drained; tolerates poor, dry, sandy soils soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 9. Watch for juniper tip blight, juniper webworm, and bagworm. Cedar-apple rust is a host issue near apple orchards; avoid planting near susceptible apples.

For a Pacific Northwest native conifer of similar character, consider Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas Fir), the iconic PNW timber tree, or Tsuga heterophylla (Western Hemlock) for shaded sites. For coastal exposure, Picea sitchensis (Sitka Spruce) thrives where salt wind defeats most evergreens.
