About This Plant
Iris reticulata 'Purple Gem' (Dwarf Iris), 'Purple Gem', is valued for seasonal interest and the role it plays in PNW garden borders.
Irises range from sun-loving Bearded Iris (rhizomatous, drought-tolerant) to wet-loving Siberian and Japanese Iris. Spectacular spring or early summer flowers in nearly every color.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained for bearded; moist for Siberian/Japanese soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 9. Bearded irises need shallow planting (rhizome at soil surface). Watch for iris borer in some regions.
For a Pacific Northwest native perennial of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Tellima grandiflora (Fringecups), or Dicentra formosa (Pacific Bleeding Heart) , all support native pollinators.
