About This Plant
Polka Dot Plant lives up to its name with an enthusiasm that borders on exuberance. The broadly oval leaves are spattered with bold spots or splashes of rose, pink, red, or white against a deep green background, depending on the variety, and in good light the effect is genuinely playful. It's a plant that makes other houseplants look quietly well-behaved by comparison. Hypoestes phyllostachya is native to Madagascar, where it grows as a small perennial shrub, but in most of North America it's treated as an annual outdoors or kept as a year-round houseplant.
Indoors, it performs best in bright, filtered light. Too much direct sun and the leaves will bleach out; too little and the colors fade to a dull, washed-out version of themselves. It appreciates consistently moist soil and tolerates humidity well, making it a natural companion for other tropical houseplants. Pinching back the growing tips regularly keeps it bushy and full; left unpinched, it tends toward legginess.
Polka Dot Plant is excellent for terrariums, dish gardens, and windowsill collections where you want a pop of color without resorting to flowers.
