About This Plant

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Fuji Waterfall' (Bigleaf Hydrangea), 'Fuji Waterfall', is valued for its summer flower heads, bold foliage, and seasonal interest in PNW gardens.

Mountain Hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) is closely allied to bigleaf hydrangea but smaller, hardier, and more sun-tolerant , refined lacecap flowers and graceful mounding form. The 'Tuff Stuff' series is widely planted.

Part shade to part sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich; pH affects flower color soil. Hardy USDA Zone 6 to 9. Blooms on OLD WOOD primarily, though many newer cultivars also rebloom on new wood. Minimal pruning needed. More cold-hardy than macrophylla.

Hydrangeas are not native to the PNW. For a similar large-flowering shrub from the regional flora, consider Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , graceful summer-blooming PNW native with cascading panicles of cream-white flowers, supporting native bees and birds.
