About This Plant

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' (Smooth Hydrangea), 'Annabelle', is valued for its summer flower heads, bold foliage, and seasonal interest in PNW gardens.

Smooth Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) is the eastern North American native of 'Annabelle' fame , large rounded white flower heads on a cold-hardy, vigorous shrub. The 'Incrediball' and 'Invincibelle' series have been bred for sturdier stems and pink color forms.

Part shade to part sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 9. Blooms on NEW WOOD , cut back hard in late winter for best flower display. Floppy stems on older 'Annabelle' selections; modern cultivars have stronger stems. Generally trouble-free.

This species is native to North America (eastern US) and contributes ecologically as a pollinator forage and nesting habitat plant on the right site.
