About This Plant
Helleborus NS Garnet Frills (Hellebore), 'Hellebore', is valued in PNW gardens for its character and seasonal interest.
Hellebores (Lenten Roses) are evergreen shade-garden perennials with leathery palmate leaves and exquisite cup-shaped flowers in white, pink, purple, green, or near-black from late winter through spring.
Part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 9. ALL PARTS TOXIC if ingested. Cut spent leaves in late winter to showcase flowers. Self-sows freely in happy gardens.
For a Pacific Northwest native plant of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray), or Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape) , all support native pollinators and birds.
