About This Plant

Globe amaranth 'Mardi Gras' is a heat-loving annual that produces dense, clover-like flower heads in a rich blend of magenta, rose, orange, and cream. A member of the amaranth family, Gomphrena globosa is native to Central America and has been grown in gardens worldwide for its remarkable staying power: the papery blooms hold their color whether fresh-cut or dried.

This selection thrives in full sun and handles summer heat without complaint. It asks for very little once established, tolerating drought, humidity, and coastal conditions well. Plants reach 18 to 24 inches tall and bloom from early summer until frost. Direct-sow after last frost or start indoors 6 to 8 weeks early.

Beyond its visual appeal, globe amaranth is a genuine pollinator magnet. Bees and butterflies visit the blooms regularly. The flowers are also edible and have a mild flavor. Safe for people and pets.
