About This Plant
Gleditsia triacanthos 'Sunburst' (Honey Locust), 'Sunburst' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.
Honey Locust , fast-growing shade tree with delicate ferny compound leaves and golden fall color. Modern landscape cultivars (e.g. 'Sunburst', 'Shademaster', 'Skyline') are thornless and seedless.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in adaptable, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 9. Watch for honey locust plant bug, mimosa webworm, and canker on stressed trees. Tolerates urban conditions and salt.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
