About This Plant
Glechoma hederacea, known as creeping Charlie or ground ivy, is a low-growing trailing plant with small, round, scallop-edged leaves that release a pleasantly minty fragrance when touched. The variegated form grown in containers shows off soft green leaves edged in creamy white, and the trailing stems make it an effective filler and spiller in hanging baskets and mixed pots.
An important note for local gardeners: Glechoma hederacea spreads aggressively by creeping stolons and is considered invasive in riparian habitats and woodland areas in the Pacific Northwest, including Oregon. It is best enjoyed strictly in containers where its rooting behavior can be controlled. Do not plant it out into the ground, compost spent plants where seeds could spread, and never allow containers to sit in soil where stems could take root outside the pot.
In a hanging basket or container planting, creeping Charlie is an easy, resilient, fast-filling trailer that tolerates shadier spots where other spillers struggle.
