About This Plant

Gardenia jasminoides 'Frostproof' (Cape Jasmine), 'Frostproof', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.

Gardenias are evergreen shrubs prized for intensely fragrant white flowers and glossy dark leaves. Marginally hardy in PNW but rewarding in sheltered coastal gardens or containers.

Part shade to part sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 8 to 11. Provide acidic soil and consistent moisture. Watch for chlorosis on alkaline soils, whitefly, and bud drop in stress conditions. Marginally hardy in zone 8.

For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
