About This Plant

G&B Seed Starter Mix is the standard seed-starting option from the G&B line by Kellogg Garden Organics. It is formulated with peat moss, perlite, pumice, and washed sand: a clean, gritty blend that provides the fine, crumbly texture and consistent moisture retention that seedlings need in their earliest stage of growth. The mix is sterile and weed-free, and its lightweight structure supports even germination without the heavy, wet conditions that can smother tender seedlings. It is made in the USA and available through nurseries in the Western states.

Moisten the mix before filling trays or cell packs, as dry peat-based mixes can initially resist water absorption. Sow seeds at the depth listed on the seed packet and cover the tray to maintain humidity until sprouts appear. Once seedlings are up, remove the cover and move them to bright light. Keep the mix evenly moist by watering gently from below when possible, which avoids disturbing small seedlings. When plants develop their second set of true leaves, transition them to a full potting mix in a larger container before moving outdoors.

For growers who do not require organic certification, this mix offers the same core seed-starting performance at a straightforward price point. If OMRI certification matters for your growing practice, the G&B Organics Seed Starter is the certified organic alternative we also carry.
