About This Plant
Forsythia × intermedia 'Karl Sax' (Border Forsythia), 'Karl Sax', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.
Forsythias are the iconic harbinger of spring , bare branches covered with bright yellow flowers in late winter or very early spring, before leaves emerge. Tough and adaptable.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in well-drained; tolerates a range soil. Hardy USDA Zone 4 to 8. Prune just after flowering to maintain shape and bloom. Generally trouble-free.
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
