About This Plant

Elijah Blue is the benchmark for ornamental blue fescue, producing tight, symmetrical mounds of intensely steel-blue foliage that hold their color through most of the year. The color is coolest and most vivid in spring and fall when temperatures dip, and the compact habit (usually around a foot tall and wide) makes it an excellent edging plant, rock garden specimen, or textural contrast plant in mixed borders. The thin, needle-like blades catch light beautifully, especially in morning or evening sun.

This is a grass that earns its keep through sheer reliability and design utility. The blue-silver tones pair naturally with lavender, ornamental sages, and sedums, and it provides grounding contrast next to plants with bold or broad foliage. Flower stalks appear in summer and can be removed if you want to maintain the tightest mound form, though they're pleasant enough to leave. After a few years, the center of the clump may thin out, and dividing in early spring keeps the plant at its best. An easy choice for dry, sunny spots where most plants struggle.
