About This Plant
Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' (Winter Creeper), 'Emerald Gaiety', is valued in PNW gardens for its character and seasonal interest.
Euonymus species range from evergreen (E. japonicus, E. fortunei) to deciduous (E. alatus / Burning Bush) with brilliant red fall color. Versatile shrubs for hedging, foundation plantings, and groundcover.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. Watch for euonymus scale (a serious pest), powdery mildew, and crown gall. INVASIVE WATCH: E. alatus and E. fortunei are on invasive lists in much of the eastern US , less aggressive in PNW but worth siting carefully.
For a Pacific Northwest native plant of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray), or Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape) , all support native pollinators and birds.
