Euonymus alatus 'Compacta' (Dwarf Burning Bush)

Dwarf Burning Bush earns its name every autumn when the foliage ignites into brilliant crimson red, one of the most vivid fall color displays in the shrub world. The 'Compacta' cultivar forms a dense, rounded mound that can reach 6-10 feet tall and wide at maturity. The small purplish-red berries that follow the inconspicuous spring flowers are attractive to birds, who then spread the seeds. That bird-dispersal habit is at the heart of an important concern.

We are selling this plant with full transparency: Euonymus alatus, including the 'Compacta' cultivar, is considered invasive in many parts of the United States. It is banned in several northeastern states and on watch lists across much of the country. Oregon has not banned it, and in an urban or suburban yard it tends to stay put. However, if you have natural areas, woodlands, or open fields nearby, burning bush can escape and out-compete native plants. If you are gardening near wildlands, we encourage you to consider alternatives such as native Itea virginica (Virginia sweetspire) or Fothergilla, which offer spectacular fall color without the ecological risk.

If you do plant it, 'Compacta' is adaptable and easy to grow in USDA zones 4-8. All parts of the plant are toxic to pets and to humans. Birds eat the berries safely.
