About This Plant
Espoma Organic African Violet Mix is a natural potting medium from Espoma Organic, designed for African violets and other indoor flowering houseplants. The formula is built primarily from processed forest products, which make up 60 to 70 percent of the blend, combined with sphagnum peat moss, perlite, humus, limestone for pH adjustment, and yucca extract as a natural wetting agent. The result is a lightweight, slightly acidic mix that balances moisture retention and drainage without compacting over time. It is made from all-natural ingredients with no synthetic additives.
Repot African violets annually, ideally in spring. Choose a container with drainage holes and add a small amount of mix to the bottom. Loosen the root ball gently, center the plant so the crown sits just at soil level, and fill around the roots, maintaining an inch of space between the soil surface and the pot rim. After planting, water from below: place the pot in a shallow tray of water and let it soak for 20 minutes, then remove and let it drain. Top watering risks crown rot and leaf spots on the velvety foliage, so the bottom-watering habit is worth establishing from the start.
Espoma is a well-established organic brand, and this mix reflects their straightforward approach: quality natural ingredients, no synthetic shortcuts. It pairs naturally with Espoma Violet liquid fertilizer for growers who want to keep the whole care routine in one organic line.
