About This Plant
Escallonia × exoniensis 'Fradesii' (Pink Princess Escallonia), 'Fradesii', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.
Escallonias are Chilean / Argentine evergreens with glossy small leaves and clusters of small pink, red, or white flowers from summer through fall. Outstanding coastal hedge shrubs.
Full sun to part sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 8 to 10. Tolerates salt spray and wind beautifully. Generally trouble-free in coastal PNW gardens. Marginally hardy inland in zone 7.
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
