About This Plant

Ensete maur. Red Abyssinian (Banana), 'Banana' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Abyssinian Banana , bold tropical foliage plant with huge paddle leaves on a thick pseudo-trunk. 'Maurelii' has dark red-burgundy leaves. Spectacular summer accent.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Hardy USDA Zone 9 to 11. Not winter-hardy in PNW; lift and overwinter in a cool greenhouse, or treat as a summer-only specimen. Heavy feeder; water generously in growth.

For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
