About This Plant

Elaeagnus umbellata 'Garnet Autumn Olive', 'Garnet Autumn Olive', is valued in PNW gardens for its character and seasonal interest.

Silverberries (Elaeagnus) are tough evergreen and deciduous shrubs with silvery foliage and small fragrant fall flowers. Outstanding coastal salt-tolerant shrubs.

Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. INVASIVE WATCH: E. umbellata and E. angustifolia are aggressive invaders in many parts of the US , choose only sterile or non-invasive cultivars (E. × ebbingei).

For a Pacific Northwest native plant of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray), or Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape) , all support native pollinators and birds.

Care Notes

Tolerates poor soils and drought. WARNING: Autumn Olive is invasive in many U.S. regions and is regulated as a noxious weed in some states. It self-seeds aggressively into wild lands and its nitrogen-fixing root nodules outcompete native vegetation. We do not recommend planting in Oregon; consider native fruiting alternatives such as Amelanchier alnifolia or Vaccinium ovatum.
