About This Plant
Elaeagnus × ebbingei (Silverberry), 'Silverberry', is valued for its garden character and seasonal interest in PNW landscapes.
Silverberries (Elaeagnus) are tough evergreen and deciduous shrubs with silvery foliage and small fragrant fall flowers. Outstanding coastal salt-tolerant shrubs.
Full sun to part shade suits this species. Plant in well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 5 to 9. INVASIVE WATCH: E. umbellata and E. angustifolia are aggressive invaders in many parts of the US , choose only sterile or non-invasive cultivars (E. × ebbingei).
For a Pacific Northwest native shrub of similar character, consider Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape, Oregon state flower), Philadelphus lewisii (Mock Orange), or Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray) , all support native pollinators and birds.
