Dragon Tree , Canary Islands native, slow-growing sculptural specimen with stiff sword-shaped blue-green leaves and an umbrella-form crown with age. A long-lived patio container plant in the PNW.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained, lean, dry soil. Hardy USDA Zone 9 to 11. Not winter-hardy outdoors; treat as a summer-patio container plant or conservatory specimen. Drought-tolerant; very low water needs.
For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
