About This Plant

Dicksonia antartica (Tree Fern), 'Tree Fern' is valued in the landscape for character, form, and seasonal interest.

Tasmanian Tree Fern , slow-growing tree fern with thick fibrous trunk and giant arching fronds. Marginally hardy in coastal southern Oregon with shelter.

Part shade to full shade suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil. Hardy USDA Zone 9 to 11. Marginal in zone 9; protect crown over winter (stuff old fronds into the crown). Keep trunk and crown moist; never let dry out.

For a Pacific Northwest native tree of similar character, consider Acer macrophyllum (Bigleaf Maple) for canopy, Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood) for spring bloom, or Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone) for evergreen sculpture and red bark.
