About This Plant
Dianthus caryophyllus 'Capitan Purple Plus White' (Carnation), 'Capitan Purple Plus White', is valued in PNW gardens for its character and seasonal interest.
Pinks, Sweet Williams, and Carnations (Dianthus) are old-fashioned perennials with intensely fragrant frilled flowers in pink, white, red, or bicolored. Many are evergreen with blue-gray foliage.
Full sun suits this species. Plant in well-drained, alkaline, lean soil. Hardy USDA Zone 3 to 9. Sharp drainage essential. Shear after flowering for repeat bloom.
For a Pacific Northwest native plant of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray), or Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape) , all support native pollinators and birds.
