About This Plant

Dahlia Rachel is valued in PNW gardens for its character and seasonal interest.

Dahlias are tuberous summer-fall perennials with spectacular flowers in nearly every color and form. Lift tubers for winter in cold areas; many overwinter in PNW.

Full sun suits this species. Plant in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Hardy USDA Zone 8 to 11. Heavy feeders. Stake taller cultivars. Watch for slugs on emerging shoots.

For a Pacific Northwest native plant of similar character, consider Aquilegia formosa (Western Red Columbine), Holodiscus discolor (Oceanspray), or Mahonia aquifolium (Tall Oregon Grape) , all support native pollinators and birds.
