About This Plant
Cupressus leylandii is a Leyland Cypress, a Hybrid (Cupressus macrocarpa × Xanthocyparis nootkatensis), originated 1888 Wales ornamental.
Fast-growing evergreen hedge or screen tree (3 to 4 ft per year young). PNW WATCHPOINT: susceptible to Seiridium and Botryosphaeria cankers, especially in stressed or crowded plantings. Do NOT plant as solid hedge in narrow rows; allow spacing. Shorter-lived (30 to 50 yr) than its Cupressus parent.
Plant in full sun, in adaptable; well-drained soil. Hardy USDA Zone 6 to 10. Short-lived (10 to 30 yr). Generally deer-resistant once established.
If you'd like a Pacific Northwest native tree with similar grace, consider Cornus nuttallii (Pacific Dogwood), Acer circinatum (Vine Maple), Arbutus menziesii (Pacific Madrone), or Amelanchier alnifolia (Saskatoon). These provide bird food, pollinator support, and Indigenous food heritage in your landscape.
